We’re all searching for the ONE REASON we’re sick.
That ONE THING that’s going to make us better. That ONE THING that will change everything.
The ONE SUPPLEMENT that’s going to cure us.
The ONE superfood that we definitely need.
The ONE vitamin deficiency that we’re missing.
The ONE natural treatment that our body needs.
The ONE diet that will solve it all.
The ONE food you need to remove/add that will change everything.
The ONE BELIEF that made us ill.
That ONE ATTITUDE we have that created illness.
That ONE bad choice we made.
That ONE lie we were living.
That ONE personality flaw we have.
That ONE bad habit we are trying to kick.
We all think that when we find that ONE THING, then we will be in perfect health and THEN our life will be good, and we can really be happy.
For some people, it is just that one thing. But they are the exception, not the rule, and I’m not interested in exceptions. You can pick up any holistic/metaphysical book and read about nothing but exceptions. And that’s just really annoying and disappointing and heartbreaking and soul crushing for the rest of us, who have to slug it out for years trying get even one little breakthrough.
It’s a total fallacy, but one that the internet and things like Facebook feed upon. The hope. That one thing. Just do this and all you’re troubles will be gone. It’s a never ending scroll of ONE THING’s and false hopes.
I’ve been chasing the end of this rainbow for YEARS now, and let me tell you:
THERE IS NO ONE REASON YOU’RE SICK.
There’s a million.
And it’s just one big huge process of peeling back layer after layer of what’s going on.
I’m guilty of this too. Every week I’d be onto the next one thing. And then the next. And then the next.
I’d always be so excited to try this new thing I heard about, and was sure it was going to fix me. It was going to be the breakthrough I’d been looking for.
But in my whole healing journey, the years I’ve been searching, the hundreds of things I’ve tried – maybe one or two really did give me a breakthrough, a leap in my health. But it was never magical, it was never overnight, and it certainly was never a cure.
Because it just doesn’t work that way.
Finding the right things that will help is half the battle (and can be incredibly hard when your first getting into the holistic health thing, and even harder in this insane online world). The next battle is you consistently doing it.
But it’s never just ONE THING.
It’s many. It’s everything.
It’s your diet, it’s finding the right foods that will help, it’s finding the right healing practices, it’s figuring out if you need more vitamins or you need to detox, or if you’re beliefs and emotions are holding you back, or if you’re being honest with yourself and living a congruent life, and if you feel connected to other people and spirituality and and and and AND.
There are endless ands.
And I get it, it’s overwhelming.
It’s so much easier to focus on just the ONE THING. And it can be helpful to do that and work in small steps. But you also need to realise there IS a bigger picture at play, and not to pin all of your health hopes and dreams on ONE THING.
If you put all of you hope and energy into finding that ONE THING, you’re going to be shit out of luck. And really disappointed.
And I think the SEARCHING can start to become a habit, a way of living.
Your stuck in the purgatory of searching.
Of WAITING until you find that ONE THING. Putting everything on hold until then. And it can be a really handy deflector from actually living your life NOW.
What if you weren’t searching anymore? What would your life be like if you weren’t always digging, researching, trying, experimenting? What would you fill your time with? What would you do with all that mental space?
This is the question I asked myself a few weeks ago: what if all of a sudden your health was just perfect, and you didn’t need to search for the next thing to help your health?
What if you weren’t jumping from one thing to the next?
So often, I have a list of 20 supplements or healing modalities I wanted to try, but was using money as an excuse. Then money became my excuse about why I wasn’t getting better.
What excuses are you using?
