Beautiful beet juice is a great liver cleanser, and hey, it’s all pink and pretty! It’s also a great test to see how your digestion’s doing.
This beet juice is my new obsession. I mean, look at that pink ombre on the crema of the juice! It’s so gorgeous!
Beets are actually really good for telling us two things about your digestion:
1. Are you absorbing nutrients?
When I started drinking beet juice again, I was really curious whether my pee would turn pink. There’s an urban legend that after you drink beet juice, if your pee turns pink that means you may have low stomach acid and aren’t absorbing nutrients properly. I couldn’t find any solid science to back this up, but it makes sense to me.
My pee didn’t turn pink so I pretty excited about that – it definitely used to, and that just means all the hard work I’ve been doing healing my stomach is working! I can also feel a big change in stomach, for example I can eat tomato skins and seeds now without pain! I also rarely have intestinal bloating or pain any more. Healing is happening. Yay!
2. How long does it take for food to go through your digestion system?
This is a really interesting question, and one we don’t think about too often. If your food is taking several days to pass through your body (as is the norm for the standard western diet), then food is rotting and becoming putrified in your colon – not good. This is how bad bacteria proliferate in your digestive system and where disease can begin.
This is more of a test when you eat beets. So after you eat beets, check how long it takes to see to see red in your bowel movement. Ideally it would be pretty quickly – less than an hour. But less than a day is pretty good.
Coffee enemas can help clear out the colon of putrified and impacted waste matter, so they are a really good idea to clear out your system along with a cleanse.
