Digestive symptoms like bloating, cramping, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain are so common now, that almost every single person I talk to has something off with their digestion (it’s fun what people will tell you when you say you help people with digestive issues!).
Digestive problems have almost become normal.
I know when I first started seeing the symptoms – severe constipation, bloating, pain etc – I brushed it off and ignored it completely because:
1. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal, take some metamucil, ignore the unbelievably painful bathroom trips and she’ll be right.
2. I was 17 and embarrassed. Who the heck was I going to tell?
Eventually this led to (or was the first signs of) leaky gut, which led to full blown celiac disease just a few short years later.
But why are these symptoms there in the first place? Because of the environment.
There is something you are taking into your body that is triggering these symptoms. There is nothing without cause and effect in this world. Those symptoms don’t just randomly pop out of nowhere – there’s a reason for them.
A healthy gut is one the most crucial parts of healing. If our gut isn’t working properly, nothing else in the body does. And toxins are wreaking havoc on the gut.
How toxins affect the gut
Chemicals in the food, air and water damage the gut. Everything from plastics and phthalates to petrochemicals.
Every time you drink tap water with fluoride and chlorine in it, you’re killing your gut bacteria.
Every time you eat produce with pesticides, you’re killing your gut bacteria and damaging the lining of the gut. Pesticides and insecticides are meant to kill living things – like those friendly little bacteria in the gut that are there to keep you healthy!
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the weed killer RoundUp. Glyphosate is sprayed on wheat crops just before harvest. It was originally patented as an antibiotic, so it’s no wonder it has disastrous effects on the gut.
Glyphosate disrupts the functioning of beneficial bacteria in the gut which contributes to permeability of the intestinal wall (leaky gut).
Things like mercury and lead do huge damage to the gut. Most of the food and water supply is contaminated with these metals because of industrial pollution, but one of the big problems is the metals used in dentistry.
Mercury amalgams, as well as braces made with metals like nickel, mean you’re swallowing small amounts of these metals every single day for years, and with amalgams, decades. That goes down through your digestive system and causes damage to the gut.
Antibiotics, aspirin and NSAIDS are the worst offenders when it comes to harming the gut.
There’s new research coming out showing that just one round of antibiotics causes permanent changes in our gut bacteria that we never recover from.
Processed foods, GMO food (soy and corn), sugar, industrial seed oils (canola, soy etc), grains (including wheat and corn), alcohol etc. Sugar feeds yeast, candida and bad bacteria in the gut.
Mycotoxins (mold toxins) are becoming more common from water damaged buildings, and they severely damage the gut.
HOW THESE TOXINS ARE DAMAGING THE GUT
These toxins are damaging the gut in three huge ways:
- killing off the healthy good bacteria in the gut, causing gut dysbiosis
- causing chronic inflammation in the gut (which interrupts the body’s detoxification system)
- destroying the lining of the gut
Once this process has kicked off, a secondary wave of toxicity starts to happen.
Because when you’ve got an unhealthy environment in the gut, this is when bad bacteria, yeast, candida, parasites and other pathogens take hold and proliferate.
Those pathogens then create toxins of their own called exotoxins, that further damage the gut wall and add to the toxicity of the body. This is called autointoxication.
A lot of this happens due to the rotting (putrefaction) and fermentation of partially digested food and waste matter that’s not making it’s way out of the body in the large intestines, causing gas, bloating and foul smelling stool (and even if there’s no symptoms, it’s still damaging to your health).
THE GUT-LIVER CONNECTION
The liver is actually an accessory digestive organ and is connected to the gut.
When the liver is overwhelmed and unable to handle all of the toxins coming into the body (which is the case for most people today), the toxins start backing up into the bloodstream and the gut.
What does all this toxicity do to the gut? It destroys the guts mucosal lining, which is there to protect the rest of the body from any toxins that come into the gut. This is where leaky gut starts. Then, the toxins are able to get directly into the bloodstream.
DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS ARE NOT NORMAL – THEY’RE SERIOUS
It might start out as just some niggly digestive symptoms, but they are signs of a larger problem, and it can snowball quickly.
Because those symptoms are SIGNS that damage to the gut is happening, that you gut bacteria are being killed off, that there is inflammation in the gut.
All these things lead to LEAKY GUT. Where the lining of the gut is damaged, the barrier is broken and there are little holes in the lining of intestines, where food particles and toxins can now get through the gut barrier that supposed to keep them out.
Leaky gut leads to SERIOUS health problems, not just food sensitivities, brain fog, but things like autoimmune conditions.
TO HEAL THE GUT, YOU HAVE TO DETOX
Of course, food plays a huge part in all of this. Those toxic foods are wreaking havoc on the gut, and removing them is half the problem.
But we also need to clean up all the toxic backup that’s been building up.
The good news is that this is really simple. The bad news is it’s also complicated.
It’s so simple to remove toxic exposures, including the chemicals and heavy metals and all that stuff. You can easily go through your food, your home, your environment and your life, find the toxic exposures and get rid of them or switch them out with non-toxic stuff. You just have to know where to look for them all.
Yes it’s a big list. But it’s totally do-able.
Then it’s time to clean out the body with detoxification strategies.
Coffee enemas are one of my favourites because they are not only on of the most powerful detox techniques out there, but they also help to clear out putrefaction and waste from the intestines, remove toxic byproducts of the harmful pathogenic organisms and over time help to kill off the harmful bacteria, yeast and parasites.
Stopping this vicious cycle of toxicity and damage to the gut is VITAL to healing the gut and getting rid of those niggly digestive symptoms (or the bigger health crises like leaky gut or autoimmune).
This is what Detox Done Different is all about. We:
- remove the environmental toxic exposures MAKING you sick – I take you through your pantry, your bathroom cabinet, every room in the house, every possible place that toxins are hiding and show you exactly what to do to remove them
- clean out and deeply detoxing all those nasty toxins (chemicals, metals, pathogens) from the body KEEPING you sick.
