I love being able to give you REAL examples of people who have healed. And so many clients I work with have some form of skin problems, as well as a digestive system that isn’t working properly.
When Amanda came to me, she’d had psoriasis since she was 14. She’d tried so many things – medications, a vegetarian diet, going gluten-free, dairy-free, acupuncture, psychiatrist, yoga, meditation, allergy panels.
But she said she felt like she was stabbing in the dark and struggling with consistency and following through with things she knew she should be doing.
In her own words – she was “high strung” and often stressed out, over emotional, crying a lot, with mood swings and bouts of anxiety and depression. One of her biggest struggles was negative self-talk and self-sabotage.
And she was just super OVERWHELMED – with information, with everything she “should” be doing, with where to start, and with life and work in general.
Amanda wanted to be able to do all the things she wanted to do – focus on building her business and feel emotionally stable to do the work she wanted to do, feel physically good enough to play the drums in her band, and have a deeper and funner relationship with her husband.
But she had no idea what foods she should be eating and what she shouldn’t be, especially after she didn’t do well as a vegan and that was supposed to be the best diet ever.
She was sick of not knowing if what she was doing was working, and sick of getting in her own way.
When we started working together in my Heal Your Gut Happy 3 month program, she had psoriasis on her elbows, knees, ankles, eyebrows, ears, scalp, and it was most severe on her legs.
With psoriasis and skin issues there’s several factors at play. Psoriasis is autoimmune, so of course it starts in the gut. So our goals were:
- heal the gut
- remove food triggers
- remove chemicals and toxins
- detox the body (with skin issues, you need to clean the liver up)
- emotional/mental healing
Over 12 weeks, here’s the changes we made for Amanda:
We started with an elimination diet – removing gluten, grains, dairy, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes – almost everything except veggies + meat!
We started switching Amanda’s beauty products. She elimination unnecessary products and starting switching to natural options, for example using coconut oil instead of moisturiser, and using Dr Bronner’s soap for body wash and soap.
Within a week, her skin was reacting well, she felt less emotional and feeling less negative, more motivated mentally.
In two weeks, she felt more mental energy, more drive and more at ease.
Then we just kept digging and making changes from there.
We looked at the deeper reasons BEHIND why she felt stressed and anxious, and why she found it so hard to relax and always felt like she should be doing something. WHERE is the stress and anxiety coming from. What udnerlying beliefs are causing that behaviour (most beliefs like that come from childhood, and we’re not aware of them at all!)
We looked at negative beliefs around her health and getting better (like that it’s not going to work and what’s the point)
We started adding foods back slowly, starting with the least likely to be reactive.
Each week we checked in with her stress and emotions, looking at the ups and downs and her triggers and emotional reactions – then exploring why she was triggered and where the emotions came from. Really often, we traced them all the way back to childhood and deeply buried traumas and beliefs.
When you start looking at all the emotional stuff and detoxing it out, it’s not like it just going and then you’re better. More and more stuff will start coming up and it usually seems like it’s a bit worst for a second because it’s all coming up. But that’s why coaching is amazing because we’re checking in every week, as new stuff comes up, and it lets us keep peeling back the layers and going deeper and deeper and RETRAINING the brain to react differently and respond differently emotionally. The brain is like a little puppy dog – you have to TRAIN it. We have to keep finding our balance again until balance becomes more natural.
Amanda had a few “off the wagon” moments when she tried eating beer and some gluten, but had a big reaction to them so soon learned it’s just not worth it. But she found her skin bounced back quicker and quicker.
We dealt with a lot of the thoughts and beliefs I see most clients going through – things like being a people pleaser and not over giving, feeling not good enough, not feeling safe in the world, trying to please everyone, being too nice
GUILT is another huge pattern that comes up a lot with clients and myself. Because GUILT always seeks PUNISHMENT. Which makes perfect sense for autoimmune disease, which is your body attacking itself.
Each week we went deeper and deeper into the emotional and mental blocks and traumas, and it was really amazing to see the realisations Amanda was having, even of traumatic events that she’d repressed!
And by the end of our 3 months, she was happier, more emotionally stable, able to cope with stress and life better, her skin was so much improved, her digestion felt way better, and she’d made huge progress in her relationships and career!
In Amanda’s own words…
“The main factor I was hoping to see improvement in was my skin (I have suffered from moderate to severe psoriasis for 16 years.) Before talking with Shae, I had psoriasis on my hands, elbows, arms, legs, knees, ankles, ears and face. I have seen a marked improvement in ALL of these areas. I have completely clear skin on my ankles now, and that hasn’t been the case for at least 5 years! My elbows and knees are still clearing up, but are much less red, less flakey and less area is affected. My hands, face and ears are also clear.
I have also experienced an improvement in mental health and emotional stability. I have a more positive mindset, am more motivated, more aware of self-defeating thoughts and behaviors, and am happier in general. I have been able identify (and even let go of some!) outdated beliefs and subconscious fears and anxieties.
My favorite thing about working with Shae is that it is totally personalized.
We walked through an elimination diet specific to my known allergies, suspected triggers and even taste preferences. We worked to make adjustments based on what is accessible to me locally in Costa Rica. Thanks to this guidance I am eating a diet that no longer causes flare-ups in my skin.
We also dived deeper into emotional issues and painful memories and Shae was very supportive through every session. She also provided exercises for me to do each week specific to my experiences and goals, many of which I continue to use even after our program ended.
This program has given me something years of doctor’s visits, books and Internet research never accomplished. I finally have a good idea of how to treat MY specific symptoms. What a relief!
I would highly recommend coaching with Shae. It is so easy to talk with her, and she will guide you to the healthier lifestyle you want to achieve.
Working with this program has been a challenge as well as a joy. I have made several lifestyle adjustments and continue to strengthen my discipline. It’s not always easy to stick to dietary restrictions and self-care habits. Sometimes I didn’t want to have our meeting, because I was tired or busy or hadn’t made the progress I’d hoped to make that week. But I always felt better after talking with Shae. Important. Understood. Like I was actively progressing toward a healthier, happier me.
I have seen so much benefit from working with Shae (for only 3 months!) that I can say it’s all worth it. The package is a great deal, and Shae included various PDFs to help me along the way. The dietary restrictions and elimination diet were more manageable because Shae was there to help every step of the way.”
I hope this inspired the crap out of you – that YOU can heal too!
