Gluten-Free is the first step to healing, but it’s also a distraction.
Yes, gluten is bad. Yes, you should give gluten-free a go.
The health effects of gluten and wheat are well documented and studied now:
- it makes you gain weight
- it has neurotoxic effects and harms the brain, causing headaches, depression, neuropathy etc.
- it damages the gut (in everyone, not just celiacs)
- it alters the micro biome
- it’s a trigger in autoimmune disease
- and it has over 300+ symptoms associated with it
But I never get them to FOCUS on “going gluten-free”.
Because that was one of the biggest mistakes I made.
Getting well again is NOT just about going GLUTEN-FREE.
GLUTEN-FREE IS A DISTRACTION
Yep. I just said that. And that’s coming from someone with CELIAC disease! And for us, gluten-free is SUPPOSED to be the CURE.
Well, it’s not.
But it’s not just about the fact that gluten-free food is just as bad as normal junk food (it is) – it’s about the MINDSET behind GLUTEN-FREE.
I spent over 6 months chasing my tail being as gluten-free as I could be, only to watch my health get worse and worse.
But I was GLUTEN-FREE. What the hell was going on? Why wasn’t the GLUTEN-FREE diet, the ONLY recognised treatment for celiac, working for me?
It turns out, health is MORE than just not eating gluten.
It’s the same with anything -FREE. Sugar-free, dairy-free, grain-free. Your focus is in the wrong direction.
What’s more important than NOT eating gluten, is what you ARE eating.
What’s more important than NOT eating gluten, is whether you’re focusing on the addressing ROOT CAUSE of illness and symptoms and HEALING the body.
Gluten is one little root cause, but NOT the whole picture.
I was so focused on eating GLUTEN-FREE, that I totally missed the point that my body was sick and damaged, and I needed to HEAL. And especially, I needed to HEAL THE GUT.
If you’re focused on eating GLUTEN-FREE, the only thing you’re going to be looking for is recipes that are GLUTEN-FREE, restaurants with GLUTEN-FREE meals, foods at the supermarket with GLUTEN-FREE on the label.
You’re spending 90% of your focus and attention on the WRONG thing.
You have to focus on what you ARE eating instead.
So instead of focusing on GLUTEN-FREE, focus on eating food that is REALS and that HEALS.
Food that is completely REAL – not in a package (even if that package comes from a health food store).
Food that HEALS the body – getting as much nutrients, vitamins, healthy fats as possible so your body can HEAL.
Fruit, veggies, meat, eggs, healthy fats and a few selected condiments.
I don’t have ANY GLUTEN-FREE flours in my cupboard.
Not even almond meal.
Not even arrowroot flour.
Not even coconut flour.
You might be really surprised to hear that, because I’m betting you might have found me BECAUSE of a GLUTEN-FREE recipe you found online.
But that was part of my journey – making the MISTAKE of FOCUSING on GLUTEN-FREE, and NOT on HEALING my body.
I spent all my TIME finding GLUTEN-FREE recipes.
I spent all my MONEY buying fancy GLUTEN-FREE ingredients.
I spent all my ENERGY in the kitchen making crazy GLUTEN-FREE meals.
All my resources were going on the wrong thing.
Going GLUTEN-FREE is a NECESSARY first step – but here’s the thing that no one tells you: it’s NOT ENOUGH.
I should have been spending my energy focusing on what HEALS.
- SUPER SIMPLE meals with veggies, healthy fats and some high quality protein to REBUILD and HEAL the body.
- Making fresh veggie JUICES to flood my body with nutrients.
- Drinking BONE BROTH to HEAL the gut and getting missing minerals and amino acids, and healing collagen.
- DETOXING the body with things like coffee enemas, activated charcoal and certain supplements.
- Rebuilding the good bacteria in the gut with FERMENTED FOODS like beet kvass, sauerkraut, kefir and good old probiotics.
That’s what I should have been focusing on.
If you’re WONDERING whether you should go GLUTEN-FREE – I honestly think pretty much everyone should.
Removing gluten is the starting point.
And while you’re at, try removing dairy, grains like rice and corn, soy and all the common food sensitivities (an elimination diet), and see if you don’t feel a WORLD of improvement.
GLUTEN-FREE IS A DISTRACTION.
GLUTEN-FREE is not the be-all end-all of wellness and getting your health back.
If you’re DISTRACTED with GLUTEN-FREE – step back and look at the bigger picture. It’s NOT about GLUTEN-FREE.
It’s about HEALING.
And healing is SO MUCH BIGGER than just gluten – even for celiacs!
