Do you need to do the elimination diet?
Whether your symptoms are digestive ones – bloating, constipation, diarehoa, stomach pain etc – or anxiety, depression, headaches, skin problems, stubborn weight (where no matter what you eat it won’t budge), autoimmune conditions – there is something going on in your gut that needs attention.
Most likely you’ve got leaky gut (even if you symptoms aren’t stomach related! But I’ll get into that another day…).
Leaky gut happens when the lining of the small intestine gets damaged. The gut lining is the barrier between you and the outside world, protecting your body and immune system from the toxic environment we’re living in these days.
When this barrier becomes compromised, it starts letting in foreign substances into the bloodstream that shouldn’t be there, like toxins, microbes and food particles.
The immune system steps in to fight off these “foreign invaders”, and ends up mistaking the food particles for bad guys, and now we have food allergies and sensitivities developing.
After being diagnosed with celiac, it took me years to even understand that I HAD leaky gut. I did a live blood analysis and was shown the food particles in my blood. I was freaked out. And over that time, I was getting more and more sensitive to food, and kept discovering new sensitivities I had, taking more foods out of my diet.
But I wasn’t really understanding the whole picture of how to heal all of this – I was just taking foods out as I reacted to them.
It took me another two years that I realised I needed to heal my gut to get the bottom of all my health issues.
So this is where an elimination diet comes in. And I so wish I had this information 5 years ago about leaky gut and an elimination diet! Don’t ignore this.
An elimination diet aims to remove all the common food sensitivities as well as those often seen in people with leaky gut. So it’s removing gluten, grains (inc. corn), dairy, soy, eggs, pork, nuts, seeds, nightshades etc.
I know, it sounds like a lot. But I promise, it is 100% doable!
It is almost impossible to heal the gut properly while you have other food sensitivities happening, constantly triggering you. Once you remove these, you’re gut can heal quickly. These sensitivities are different for everyone, which is why an elimination diet is really great, because it’s figuring out what YOU are sensitive too!
