Before we even talk about fancy detoxification strategies, we need to remove ALL the toxins in your environment that are making you toxsick in the first place.
And the best place to start is with things that are completely unnecessary anyway, and let’s face it – a total marketing con job to convince us we actually need this crap!
All of these things became part of ‘normal’ life in the last 40 – 50 years, because of brilliant marketing that told us fresh air is bad, smelling like a human is bad, and somehow we all got duped into thinking it’s a lot better for everything to smell like synthetic chemicals.
Here are 5 things you can stop doing, eating and using TODAY to drastically reduce your toxic load.
1. USING ANYTHING SCENTED – ESPECIALLY LAUNDRY DETERGENT
Laundry detergent doesn’t seem that important at first, because it’s only touching your clothes.
And while the skin contact matters, the biggest problem with the chemicals used in the laundry is that washing machines actually have air vents that release these chemicals into the air in the entire house. Your breathing these toxins in.
Researchers found that running a regular laundry cycle with scented liquid laundry detergent emitted more than 25 volatile organic compounds, two of which (acetaldehyde and benzene) are classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as carcinogens and have no set safe exposure limit.
‘FRAGRANCE’ = CODE FOR HIDDEN TOXINS
Under the label ‘fragrance’, companies can actually add any number of their 3,100 synthetic chemical ingredients, often made from petrochemicals – without actually listing the chemical on the label because they are a “trade secret”.
2. USING AIR FRESHENERS
Air fresheners have to be one of the biggest cons of all time. They do nothing to actually ‘clean’ the air, they smell like fake crap, and they are poisoning you! What is so wrong with the smell of air anyway?
I went to my Dads house last weekend, and he is almost as crunchy health-nut as me, and there in the bathroom was a can of Air Wick! I couldn’t believe it. I went to Dad and asked why the heck he has that stuff and told him how toxic it was, and he looked at me like he’d literally never though of that before. Craziness.
Those air fresheners are full of solvents that are neurotoxins. In fact, they’re so high in solvents that they actually have a drug-abuse warning on the label! Seriously, check it out!
“Air fresheners have become a staple in many American homes and offices, marketed with the promise of creating a clean, healthy, and sweet-smelling indoor atmosphere. But many of these products contain phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) – hazardous chemicals known to cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects, and reproductive problems. NRDC’s independent testing of 14 common air fresheners, none of which listed phthalates as an ingredient, uncovered these chemicals in 86 percent (12 of 14) of the products tested, including those advertised as “all natural” or “unscented.” – National Resources Defense Council
3. WEARING PERFUME
Perfume is just a bunch of toxic chemicals they threw together in a lab and put in a pretty pink bottle, and somehow they convinced us to willingly spray this crap on ourselves! Since when did it become so disgusting to actually smell like a human?!
The worst part about all the chemicals in perfume is that they are BIOACCUMULATING, persistent toxins – fancy words that just mean they get STORED in the body, and can continue doing damage to your cells day in day out, causing chronic inflammation.
You know what that means, right? You’re going to have to spend a couple of years detoxing this stuff out! Not so worth it now, huh?
Perfume is a cocktail of parabens, some phthalates (diethyl phthalate is a chemical found in 97% of Americans, and it’s linked to sperm damage), solvents, dyes, preservatives (often formaldehyde) and whatever the heck they’ve hidden under the term ‘fragrance’.
These chemicals are Hormone-disrupting chemicals that cause things like sperm damage, thyroid damage and even cancer.
Most chemicals in perfumes have NEVER been assessed for safety. These synthetic fragrance chemicals are now being found in the cord blood of newborn babies. (1)
4. EATING GLUTEN
One of the biggest problems with gluten (but certainly not the only one) is that the wheat crops are HEAVILY sprayed with glyphosate days before harvest, and allowed to dry onto the crop because it increases yields and allows for an earlier harvest.
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup – an herbicide patented by Monsanto in 1974. 10 years before that it was patented as a broad sprecrum chelator and antibiotic.
Yep that’s right, they KNOW that it kills the bacteria in your gut and strips minerals out of your body.
Use of glyphosate has dramatically risen in the past 15 years.
Because Roundup is a chelator of minerals, plants treated with Roundup have a reduction in nutrients, making them weaker and kicking off a vicious cycle of deficient and weak plants, then we eat the plants and become deficient and weak too.
The way that it kills weeds is by making the nutrients unavailable to the plant, so it weakens the defences of the plant.
The plants have Roundup residue INSIDE of them – you can’t wash it off.
Glyphosate is directly linked to autoimmune disease and systemic inflammation. And disrupts the functioning of beneficial bacteria in the gut which contributes to permeability of the intestinal wall (leaky gut).
PS. Other heavily glyphosate sprayed crops: corn, soy, and milk and meat from animals that eat those foods.
5. USING HAIR SPRAY
Hairspray is basically liquid plastic – most contain phthalates (hormone disrupters), solvents (alcohol and hydrocarbons), propellants, propylene glycol, isobutane, propane and fragrance (read: hidden chemicals).
The worst part about hair spray is that it’s in aerosol form and you’re spraying it directly on you’re face, at your nose. You might as well leave the window open and invite the robber in yourself!
Those tiny droplets go into your lungs (and through the skin) and directly into the bloodstream.
