Do you really know what to look for when you’re choosing which eggs to buy? Weak standards, no government regulations and misleading claims – enter the tricky world of egg labelling. And the problem isn’t just with ‘cage-free’, it’s free-range and organic as well.
Recently there was a salmonella outbreak traced back to eggs here in QLD. That sparked a conversation with my Mum on egg labelling – and the murky and sometimes misleading labels they use.
She assumed, like most people do, that she was doing the right thing by buying free-range eggs over cage eggs. She thought that meant that the chickens get to roam outside and are fed a proper, healthy diet. I had to tell her that sadly, that wasn’t the case at all. Read the rest of this post »
